Het boek is een hommage aan de zeer getalenteerde fotograaf Esther Kroon, die in 1992 op brute wijze in Guatemala werd vermoord. Kroon studeerde aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en specialiseerde zich in kinderportretten. Haar werk kenmerkt zich door extreem lage oogpunten en ze combineert graag flitslicht met daglicht. Hierin herkennen we de invloed van Rineke Dijkstra, voor wie Kroon jaren als assistent werkzaam was.

A considerable portion of Dutch photographer Esther Kroon's production consists of black-and-white portraits of children, made between 1988-1990 in the back streets of Barcelona and Amsterdam. The photographs are taken from a low viewpoint with flash, focusing attention on the children themselves, who seem full of confidence. This book includes numerous images from Kroon's archive, especially her portrayals of young gypsies and children from working-class neighbourhoods.
