Jan Wingender bought his first photobook in 1956, when there was little interest in the genre. This was the start of one of the largest ever collections of Dutch photobooks. Comprising more than 7,000 editions, it represents a treasure trove of the top-quality book design for which the Netherlands is known internationally.
This autumn the Nederlands Fotomuseum will present a selection from this rich collection. The exhibition will include some rare and unique editions, including Het boek van de PTT (1938, with photos by Piet Zwart) and Baas in eigen buik (1978, with photos by Eva Besnyö and others).
In 2011 the Nederlands Fotomuseum acquired Jan Wingender’s collection, with the help of the Mondrian Fund. A book on the collection has been published by Komma Publishing. Entitled 1/110. Dutch Publications from the Wingender Collections, it contains essays by Hinde Haest and was designed by Typography Interiority & Other Serious Matters.
