Using a ‘hit-and-run’ style of photography, Otto Snoek (b. 1966) has photographed national celebrations and commemorations in virtually every country of the European Union. Snoek is interested in the growing sense of national identity and history that, in many European countries, is currently going hand in hand with a rise in right-wing nationalism. Various nations are starting to focus on their cultural traditions and individual identity and to commemorate or celebrate historic events with new vigour. Snoek shows how, in everyday life, this trend manifests itself at public gatherings and spectacles, organised or informal. He focuses on the behaviour of groups and individuals, on their dress, on the immediate surroundings, but most especially (inspired by the idea of a “faceless” European Union) on faces in the crowd.
