From 13 September 2014 to 11 January 2015, the Nederlands Fotomuseum will present more than 130 vintage prints produced by the American street photographer Mark Cohen. Entitled Dark Knees, a large retrospective of his work from the period 1969 to 2012 will be on show in the Netherlands for the first time. It is a remarkable oeuvre, which first became famous in 1973 with an exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Its powerful allure has recently been rediscovered in Europe. Cohen’s individual style of photography is directly evident. Fragments of gestures, postures and bodies form the basis of every work. His unique visual language places him in a long tradition of major street photographers such as Eugène Atget, Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand.
