“I’d been fascinated by the female nude ever since art school, but now that I had around ten nude models a month coming to my studio, things began to get out of hand. I was starting to assess practically every woman I met in terms of the erotic sights she might have to offer.” (Translated from Ik Jan Cremer Derde Boek, p.231. 2008)
For the fourth in its successful The Collection Illuminated by … exhibition series, the Nederlands Fotomuseum has invited writer, artist and photographer Jan Cremer to guest-curate an exhibition of his personal choice of images from the museum’s rich and varied collection. Cremer has selected fifteen photographs that he finds inspiring or personally significant. Like his own work, the selection reflects his fascination with the female body. Cremer shows wonderful nude portraits made by Wally Elenbaas, Nico Jesse, Bertien van Manen, Sanne Sannes and other photographers.
Accompanied by Cremer’s comments, the photographs in this intimate exhibition throw new light on the collection and, at the same time, offer visitors a clear picture of what drives Jan Cremer’s multifaceted artistic practice.
