The Nederlands Fotomuseum is adding an extra dimension to this exhibition by bringing The Europeans, a renowned photo-series made by Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 – 2004), to the Netherlands for the first time ever. Cartier-Bresson published the series in book form in 1955 and many of its constituent images have since become recognized international icons of classic black-and-white photography. The series paints a picture of Europe in the post-war period, busy building a new future but still haunted by the past. Cartier-Bresson focused on the everyday lives of individual people and created a portrait of Europe entirely divorced from politics and national display. It is a deeply humanist vision of the kind cherished throughout Western Europe in the Cold War era – a vision of a Europe of culture, history, freedom and humanity. Since Cartier-Bresson continued working on the series right through to 1991, the exhibition offers a picture of Europe over a period of more than six decades, starting in 1929.
