The Nederlands Fotomuseum manages the archives of around 125 Dutch photographers, including such famous names as Paul Citroen, Martien Coppens, Ed van der Elsken, Nico Jesse, Peter Martens, Cas Oorthuys and Piet Zwart. To an important extent their work represents the history of Dutch photography.
The collection included photographs of various 20th century subjects, such as the Second World War, the disastrous floods of 1953, the decolonisation of Indonesia and The Beatles. There are also photographs of Rotterdam, the harbours, almost every other place in the Netherlands and many foreign travels.
The prints, negatives and slides are preserved in air-conditioned vaults and are not accessible to the public.

The collection is consulted daily by professional image users, such as newspapers, publishers, exhibition curators and advertising agencies. Scans as well as new, handmade prints are supplied to individuals and companies. The museum passes on an important part of the proceeds from sales of photographs to the photographers or their heirs.
