1912 Frits Jacobus Rotgans is born on June 27 in Amsterdam.
1924-1927 He learns the basic principles of photography from his
architect father, who made use of the photographic techniques of the
times for his models.
1932 Commercial art training at the Institute for Applied Art
Education in Amsterdam. His first photograph is published in the weekly
Wij. Ons werk ons leven. He then embarks on a career as a freelance
commercial designer.
1937-1939 Works for various firms and lives in The Hague. In
1939 he is briefly mobilised. At the end of the year he moves back to
Amsterdam, where he lives and works for the rest of his life.
1942-1944 His chief occupation is forging identity cards. He
also records the German occupation in Amsterdam on colour slides. In
1944 he narrowly escapes arrest and goes into hiding in Best, in the
south Netherlands.
1947 Transport officer with the Dutch Rhine Mission in the Ruhr,
where he photographs shipping traffic and shoots his first wide-angle
picture. Begins to construct his own cameras.
1950 Takes up photography professionally. In the fifties he concentrates on ports, inland and sea shipping.
1952 His first book, De Nederlandse Rijnvaart, appears.
1959 The book Rotterdam, stad en haven is published.
1978 Frits Rotgans dies on May 30 in Amsterdam.
