Nicholas Nixon: The Brown Sisters 1975-2009
The Nederlands Fotomuseum contains a treasure-house of Dutch photography. 129 archives are preserved in the museum’s climatised storerooms, comprising three million negatives and a large quantity of slides, prints and documents about the life and work of such Dutch photographers as Ed van der Elsken, Cas Oorthuys and Piet Zwart. The museum also collects amateur photography and administers the archives of Katharina Eleonore Behrend and Hein Wertheimer, for example. Thanks to the wealth of subjects, genres and applications, the collection not only embraces the history of Dutch photography, but also presents more than a century of Dutch history in images.

supplementary collections policy
The collection of the Nederlands Fotomuseum has its origin in the collection of the former Nederlands Fotoarchief (nfa) which in 2003 became the Collections department of the museum. The department has continued to acquire photographers’ archives and has developed a policy on supplementary collections. An advisory committee consisting of independent experts decides whether new acquisitions fit within the collection.

all sorts of forms
The collection consists mainly of 20th century photography. The makers are usually Dutch nationals but the museum also preserves work by foreign photographers who have spent longer periods in the Netherlands. The museum collects photography in all sorts of forms – from photo albums to glass negatives and from autochromes to stereographs. The 21st century is still young and after the advent of digital photography the museum is now also focussing on collecting and preserving digital images.

managing the collections
The photographic material in the museum is properly packed, preserved and described. The department of Collections keeps up with the latest developments in the field of managing collections. It will thus be possible for this cultural heritage to be consulted by researchers and interested parties for a long time to come. More and more photographs are being included in the image bank. On the Collections projects page you can find out more about the museum’s projects in the field of collection management.
