Marlo Broekmans was born in Hoorn (Holland), Diana Blok was born in
Montevideo (Uruguay). They formed a unique photographic duo (1978-1981)
that developed a well known body of work called 'Invisible Forces',
published under that title in 1983. Historically it is the only example
we know of two women photographers, with both their signatures on all
prints.
Basing their work mainly on self portraiture, they related totally in
the conception and composition of ideas, sharing roles as director
behind the camera and actress in front of it. They concurred in the
darkroom as well in the business of selling and distributing the final
product.
This unusual partnership was not based on a political conviction like
socialism or feminism, but on knowing each other's dreams and thoughts;
illogical and mystical, with love as basic drive.
'What we see in this book is one moon nature looking into another
discovering an infinitely reflecting mirror. This is the deeper
'original mirror', revealing the multiple faces of psyche, which the
photographers have made in a language distinctively their own.'(Carol
Whetstone)
'Invisible forces' was exhibited throughout the world, impacting the public as well as influencing many artists at the time.
Diana and Marlo travelled extensively to ancient cultures such as
India, Nepal, Italy and Greece where they staged photographs as well as
documented daily life.
Both photographers are self taught and reside currently in Amsterdam.
They have continued their work independently and their work is
regularly exhibited and published.
