30.JUN.2007_23.SEP.2007 Jazz in Rotterdam! Jazz in Las Palmas! Between
1955 and 1961 Ed van der Elsken attended the famous night-time jazz concerts in
the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. All the great jazz stars of that era performed
there, such as Chet Baker, Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald and Art Blakey. Van
der Elsken was there and he photographed them on stage and back stage. In 1959
Ed van der Elsken’s book Jazz
appeared, with texts by Jan Vrijman, Hugo Claus, Simon Carmiggelt and others.
After 1961 the love affair was over: “The world is full of fantastic things,
chaps, that I’ve also got to see.”
We are pleased that this summer the museum can show a selection of vintage prints of his best jazz photos, as a part of North Sea Round TownTo mark this occasion, the reprint of the Jazz book, a issued by the famous German publisher Steidl, will be presented in the Fotomuseum. |
