Words and images
The Dutch photographer Andrea Stultiens is working on a visual biography of a man named Kaddu Wasswa, who was born in Uganda in 1933 and who had lived there all his life. Wasswa had played an important role within his own community, both as a teacher and as a social worker. In the mock-up with his letter, you will find an amazing number of roles listed that Wasswa played during his lifetime. Special about the now 77 year old man is also that he has always documented his activities, in writing as well as in taking and collecting photographs. Wasswa’s personal history reflects the history of Uganda, the country that will be celebrating its 50 years of independence from the British in 2012

Three sets of eyes Andrea Stultiens met Wassa and discovered his archive in 2008 through Wasswa’s grandson Arthur C. Kisitu, with whom she was already friends. With the assistance of Kisitu, she decided to make a photographic project from the archive, combining her own photographic work with her interest (expressed in earlier projects) for the vernacular image. Stultiens tells Wasswa’s story through this archive, without hiding herself as an author. Book A book with the same title will be published in the Fall by Post Editions.
